The Red Devon is a very old breed of cattle originally from Southwestern England. They have long been a popular choice for both milk and meat. The meat is well marbled and tender, and the milk is high in butterfat and milk solids. The Rotokawa Red Devons come from Wanaganui, New Zealand. Ken McDowell selected animals from the Homeslee Stud, who originally imported these cattle from Tasmania in the early 20th century. These cattle have been raised strictly on forage for 100 years now. As a result they have developed into superb animals for finishing on grass. The cows are early maturing, often finishing around 1200 lbs. in 16-18 months, whereas other breeds take 22-24 months to finish on grass. The cows are known for easy calving and reproductive success, and the bulls for their superior breeding ability and for stamping their progeny.
We hope to continue this tradition of superior grass fed genetics; in the future we anticipate selling breeding stock as well as the finished beef.
